Russia and Ukraine: Will 2023 mark the end of the Russian-Ukrainian war?
At the time, Putin informed the Russian people that he wanted to "disarm Ukraine and denazify it" to defend the people of Ukraine from what he termed "terrorists." For eight years, the government of Ukraine has used terror and genocide against its own people.
This ongoing war has caused considerable losses to both countries, but it is not only a regional matter between the two neighboring countries, but it has spread to most countries in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa due to its significant economic consequences for these countries, causing a serious economic crisis related to the cessation of exports from Russia and Ukraine from; energy, fuel and food products, which occupy an important place on the world market for agricultural products and whose wheat exports represent 23% of the world market.
The Ukrainian war led to a rise in energy and fuel prices in countries that depended on exports from these two countries and a decrease in the standard of living of their populations, who still suffer from a shortage of products, high prices, and a high cost of fuel.
Indicators of peace
In recent times, various parties have witnessed allegations that it would be possible to negotiate a solution to the crisis. Russian President Vladimir Putin recently expressed his country's willingness to agree with all parties to the conflict in Ukraine on acceptable solutions, noting that these parties refuse to do so.Russia is seeking to negotiate on the basis of a fait accompli because it considers the areas it has controlled since February to be Russian territory.
On the other hand, Kyiv demands the complete withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukrainian territory as a prerequisite for negotiations. In this context, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuliba said that "in order to end the war in Ukraine, Russia must withdraw its troops from the entire territory of Ukraine," stressing his country's desire to organize a "peace summit" by the end of February next year, preferably at the UN podium with OSCE Secretary-General Antonio Guterres as a potential mediator.
Kouliba stressed the ten conditions announced by President Vladimir Zelensky in a speech recorded at the G20 summit, held in Indonesia in mid-November, as a peace formula whose Last step is to "sign a peace agreement". The spokesman of the Russian president reacted to these statements by saying: "We refuse to conduct peace negotiations on the conditions of Ukraine".
International situation
The past period has been marked by attempts at negotiations between Moscow and the United States, as well as with NATO and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. Russia declared the failure of these attempts, and a Kremlin spokesman said that the US president stipulated Russia's withdrawal from Ukraine, which is impossible. On the other hand, the White House said that Putin has shown no signs of willingness to end the war in Ukraine. Britain has also warned against Putin using peace negotiations to rebuild the Russian military. British Foreign Secretary James Cloverley said Putin could use the peace talks in Ukraine to rearm his forces before launching a new offensive.
Meanwhile, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in a telephone conversation with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, stressed the need to accelerate the creation of a basis for negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.
Erdogan had previously expressed the hope of establishing a peaceful route between the two countries along the grain corridor. "The ideal approach is the transition from conversation to peace," Erdogan said, explaining how the grain corridor provides a roadmap to peace.
It should be noted that on July 22 in Istanbul the signing of the "document of the initiative for the safe shipment of grain and foodstuffs from Ukrainian ports" took place between Turkey, Russia, Ukraine, and the UN. The agreement included the provision of grain exports stuck in Ukrainian Black Sea ports around the world to cope with the global food shortage crisis that threatened a humanitarian catastrophe.
